Paul Lewis: A Working-Class Pianist with Extraordinary Talent
Born on May 20, 1972, Paul Lewis is an English classical pianist. His musical journey is unique, coming from a working-class family with no musical background. Despite this context, Lewis discovered his passion for music through the cello, the only instrument for which his school could provide support.
At the age of 14, his musical path took a significant turn when he was accepted into Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, where he began his piano studies under the guidance of distinguished teachers such as Ryszard Bakst, Joan Havill (at Guildhall School of Music and Drama), and Alfred Brendel. His emerging talent shone when he won second prize in the World Piano Competition in London, marking the beginning of an exceptional career.
Impressive Career
Paul Lewis has left an indelible mark on the musical scene, especially at Wigmore Hall in London. He has performed at numerous festivals and prestigious venues worldwide, collaborating with renowned conductors and orchestras.
One of Lewis’s notable achievements was his complete performance of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas on tours in the United States and Europe between 2005 and 2007. This monumental accomplishment was reflected in his recordings for Harmonia Mundi, each of which was recognized as an “Editor’s Choice” by Gramophone magazine. In 2008, volume 4 of the series received prestigious awards for “Best Instrumental Recording” and “Recording of the Year.”
In an unprecedented act, Lewis became the first pianist to perform Beethoven’s five piano concertos in a single season at the BBC Proms in July and August 2010.
Distinctive Style
Paul Lewis’s musical style has been praised for its deep connection with the music. Geoffrey Norris of the Daily Telegraph describes his playing as a “firm connection between his profound thoughts about music and his articulation of them.” Lewis plays with intellectual rigor and imaginative vigor, defining character and blending rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic elements exceptionally.
Schubert and the Magic of Romanticism
Franz Schubert, despite his short life, left a musical legacy that continues to resonate in the hearts of classical music lovers. His piano sonatas are considered gems of Romanticism, and Paul Lewis, one of the foremost interpreters of this repertoire, will provide a unique and passionate performance.
Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the magic of Schubert through the unique interpretation of Paul Lewis.
